...just for now... :(
My little boy, Jian, 1 yr and 4 m0. ago
Me and Jian went to the nearest shopping mall today to buy a sippy cup for him since all of his 9 feeding bottles broke. Not that all of those bottles were broken at the same time but it's because he is so fond of throwing things around the house these days and his feeding bottles were one of his favorites to be thrown. Sigh! Oh, well, going back to the mall story, as I placed Jian inside my big cart, I spotted a cool Sesame Street sippy cup for him. I asked him instantly if he likes it. He answered an excited "YES" and grab the cup from my hand and placed it inside the cart. I smiled and grabbed another two to check if they have a better design but then he grabbed the cups again from my hand and dunked it in the cart! I was so startled that he showed eagerness to switch drinking milk from a feeding bottle to a sippy cup (because Jian already uses a sippy cup when drinking water). I was way too excited to go home and try those sippy cups for my son. So off we went home after getting everything on my grocery list that could fit to the budget I have on hand.
Upon arriving home, I sterilized the cups right away. While waiting for the water to boil, me and Jian were talking about the sippy cups and he was so excited to try it that he keeps on asking me to give him milk. After almost 5 minutes, I gave him his milk now being placed on his new sippy cup but instead of getting those wide enthusiastic eyes after his first sip, he acts as if he wants to vomit! He gave the cup to me and told me that he didn't want it already. I kept on pouring the milk unto the two remaining cups simultaneously to try if he just wanted the Cookie Monster or Elmo design rather than Big Bird but I failed.
Until later tonight, I continued to explain to Jian that he should be drinking milk from his sippy cup already because he's already a big boy. I told him that sippy cups are for "kuyas" (elder brothers) and that is what he is now since we have baby Kelliyah. Jian doesn't seem to buy everything I said and always blurts out a hard NO! I tried putting a bit of chocolate syrup on the side of the holes of the sippy cup just to let him think that these cups won't make him feel like vomiting. But then, after licking all the chocolate, he still did not sip from the cup. He acted to throw it. I shouted at him with wide eyes. He cried. He kept on crying as if I was torturing him by trying to drink from his new cup. He cried and cried until he was tired and went to sleep on his Dad's lap without drinking his milk as he usually does before going to dreamland. I am so frustrated. Thinking that I did not buy some necessary things on the grocery list just to make sure those 3 sippy cups would be bought. Hay.. I would actually wanted to throw the cups out of frustration.
But right now, as I look at my kuya Jian while he sleeps, my motherly feelings surfaced. I pitied my little boy. I guess, sometimes we parents should really learn the art of waiting for our toddlers to be genuinely ready to shift from one routine to another (even if it means ruining your household budget...hehe). Sometimes we just really have to accept that we were fooled by their cuteness. Sometimes we just have to tame ourselves and assure ourselves that nothing is going to be wasted. Sometimes we really have to buy just ONE bottle to try it first if he'll like it and not trust our toddler's amusement on the things we ought to buy. Haay, too much for a day!
At the present time, I'll just give my little boy a goodnight kiss and tell him tomorrow that we will buy new feeding bottles for him and just save his sippy cups until he is ready to try it truthfully... And that Mommy won't force him anymore. :)
I love you son...
